John Stamos explains why he butted heads with Bob Saget on ‘Full House’

John Stamos reveals that things were not so sunny behind the scenes of “Full House.”

In his newly released memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” Stamos wrote that he and co-star Bob Saget butted heads due to the “General Hospital” alum’s burgeoning friendship with Dave Coulier on the sitcom.

“Dave and I becoming best friends is throwing Bob off a bit,” he penned in the book. “He was Dave’s best friend before I came around.”

Stamos, 60, wrote that he also began spending more time off-camera with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen — who took turns playing Michelle Tanner — and began to develop a close bond with them.

Writers of the show noticed and began developing more storylines between Tanner and Stamos’ character, Jesse Katsopolis.

John Stamos admitted he and Bob Saget did not like each other during the first couple of seasons of “Full House.”

Naturally, this irked Saget, who played Danny Tanner, the father of Michelle.

“‘I’m the father of these babies; why is Stamos getting all the good scenes with them?’ Bob gripes,” Stamos wrote.

Their rivalry even descended into middle-school shenanigans.

“During photoshoots or promos for the show, Bob and I often jockey to be the one holding Michelle,” Stamos recalled. “We argue over who should be in the center or do single photos with Mary-Kate or Ashley.”

Their sniping carried over on a photo shoot with legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, who eventually “had enough and kicks everyone off the set but me and Mary-Kate,” whom she wrapped in a blanket.

“I jokingly suggest to Bob that he take off his shirt, grab a binky, and come cuddle with me in the blankie. He doesn’t find that funny,” Stamos continued.

The “ER” alum noted that since Saget was a comedian and he was an actor, his co-star would try and get laughs from the crew — often at the expense of Stamos.

“It becomes a game for him,” he wrote. “The more serious I get, the more he tries to sabotage the moment. One of his favorites is when he grabs a fork during a dinner scene in the ‘Full House’ kitchen and pretends to stab his private parts, yelling, ‘I hate my c–k!’”

Stamos said that when Saget began hosting “America’s Funniest Home Videos” in 1989, their tensions eased as “Bob now has two hit shows.” However, what really helped them achieve peace was tragedy.

Eventually, the co-stars ironed out their differences and became devoted friends.

Simultaneously, all three male leads experienced turmoil in their personal lives.

Saget’s youngest sister, Gay, was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and fibrosis in the skin and other areas of the body, per the National Institutes of Health.

Meanwhile, Stamos’ sister Janeen was mistakenly diagnosed with a brain tumor and Coulier’s sister, Sharon, was diagnosed with cervical, ovarian and uterine cancer.

Stamos detailed his time on “Full House” and his personal life in his newly released memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.”

The three of them found a connection — a bond in grief — and they eventually become “real brothers.”

Sadly, Saget died unexpectedly at the age of 65 in January 2022 of blunt head trauma, leaving Stamos bereft.

“I am broken. I am gutted. I am in complete and utter shock,” he tweeted hours after the comedian’s death was announced. “I will never ever have another friend like him. I love you so much Bobby.”
